Sonu Nigam in Malayalam
The song, Thoo Manjin... will feature in Shyam Mohan's directorial debut, 8.20. The song revolves around the dream sequence of its lead actors Avanthika and Arjun. "I am a huge fan of Sonu and I wanted to make him sing at least one song in my directorial venture. His voice is so expressive that I felt nobody else can do justice to that song. Since my lead characters are NRIs, the slight north Indian diction was perfect for the characters," says Shyam.
The music is scored by Alex Kayyalakkakom and lyrics are by Engandiyoor Chandrasekharan. "8.20 is a different film in every sense. It is not the usual love story or campus movie that we see in Mollywood. Though, there are a few elements of both to attract the youth," says Shyam.
Working with Mohanlal is a new experience - Padmapriya
And when we thought her career graph was dipping with the wrong choices, she appears to be bouncing back with two major multi-starrer movies under her belt — Siddique's Ladies and Gentleman and Amal Neerad's anthology movie,Anju Sundarikal.
Padmapriya, who is currently shooting for Ladies and Gentleman, will be sharing screen space with M-Town's biggies such as Mohanlal, Meera Jasmine and Mamta Mohandas in the film. Though the actress was cautious not to reveal details about her role in the Mohanlal-starrer, she said, "I play a girl called Jyothy and it's absolutely a fun-filled role. That's all I can say about it. I'm having a crazy schedule, at the same time it is a lot of fun. Siddique Sir knows how to handle the story and the characters; and, of course, the audience have high expectations from him."
Padmapriya is also excited about teaming up with director Amal Neerad for the second time after Bachelor Party. "I've high hopes on my next movie, Anju Sundarikal, with Amal Neerad. The movie will go on floors in February," says Padmapriya. Fahadh Faasil, Dulquer Salmaan, Nivin Pauly, Isha Sharvani and Biju Menon also play lead roles in the anthology.
With a couple of her recent movies having bombed at the box office, looks like Padmapriya has decided to go slow when it comes to choosing new projects. "It's not only the story and the script that matter to me but also the people whom I work with. For instance, I have worked with Mohanlal in two other movies before. And each time, it's a new experience working with him. So I am ready to wait for the right movie and the right script. I am not a person who wants to be in the limelight all the time. All I want is to be a part of good projects and be remembered for that," says Padmapriya.
Prithviraj in Ranjith Leela
Director Ranjith's next project, Leela, has been a hot topic of discussion in Mollywood eversince the project was announced. Based on R Unni's novel by the same title, the movie will see Mammootty in the lead.
Now, the latest buzz is that, Prithviraj will play a prominent role in the movie. However, the actor says he is clueless about it. "Funny part is, I don't know about it. I'm yet to meet Ranjith and I can talk about the project only then," says the actor, adding that he will be meeting the director in a week's time.
If Prithviraj joins Leela, this will see the actor team up with Mammootty a second time afterPokkiri Raja, where the two played brothers. Leela will also mark Ranjith's directorial after the Mohanlal-starrer Spirit. Buzz is that Ann Augustine will play the title role and that director Shyamaprasad might compose the music for the movie.

My own excitement drives me, not just compliments: Fahadh Faasil
The industry is abuzz about Fahadh Faasil'sbrilliant performance in Rajeev Ravi's directorial debut, but the actor is rather unaffected by all the adulation. "It feels good to hear good things about yourself. However, it's my own excitement that drives me, not just compliments," says the actor.
Fahadh says the best compliment he received was from Rajeev Ravi himself, who told him that the movie was way beyond what he had conceived. "More than the reviews on my performance, what made me happy is the fact that people liked the film. It's a different film in every sense, and I'm glad there is space for such a film in the Malayalam film industry today," says Fahadh.
Red Wine
Fahadh obviously has no plans to rest on his laurels, and is now busy with Salam Bapu's Red Wine, which also has superstar Mohanlal. "I don't share screenspace with Mohanlal in this film, so I haven't interacted with him on the set. But I'm close to him and he is as excited about the project as I am," says the actor. So what attracted him to the film? "My character, Anoop, is someone who voices his concerns and fights against injustice in society. It's a character we can identify with. The story revolves around three people, and my character brings them together. It's something completely new when compared to the films that I have done before. What attracted me was the unconventional role in a conventional script. It's indeed a challenging role," he says. The shoot for Red Wine will wrap up in a week's time.
Turning Changampuzha
The actor will also be working on Priyanandan's next, Arikil Undayirunnenkil, where he plays poet Changampuzha. "I've always wanted to do a role based on a real life person. I think it would be a dream for any actor to play someone like Changampuzha. There were lots of other proposals but this one worked, finally," says Fahadh. Arikil Udayirunnenkil will start rolling by the end of this year.
Romance in real life
The actor had recently said during an interview that he is in love with someone who is not from the film industry, but refused to reveal more details. "I don't want to comment on it. It's not something to be celebrated, it's very personal and I would like to keep it that way," he signs off.
I want to marry someone like Rasool
I want to marry someone like Rasool: Andrea Jeremiah
A deer caught in the headlights. That's what Andrea Jeremiah says she felt like on day one of the shoot of her Mollywood debut, Annayum Rasoolum. The singer-actress-dubbing artist, who wears her many hats with elan, gets talking about love, life and of course, movies, in a tete-a-tete with TOI.
Crossing the language barrier
Director Rajeev Ravi, I must say, has a great vision; for, he gave me very few dialogues to mouth in the film (laughs). I personally feel dubbing is half the job in every actor's career; so initially, I tried my hand at dubbing my lines, although this is my first film in Malayalam and I've no clue about the language (Interestingly, Andrea has dubbed in Tamil for actresses Taapsee Pannu and Ileana D'Cruz in their respective films). However, when Rajeev declared that my accent made the very earthy Anna sound convent educated, I gave up (smiles). Finally, Shakthi dubbed for me.
Rajeev wanted me to sing
I'm happy my song Kando Kando in the film has been well-received. Actually, it was Rajeev who insisted on my voice for the song. Thus happened my singing debut in M-Town, hand-in-hand with my film debut here. In fact, I had offers to sing in Malayalam films much earlier. But the language was so hard, I almost cried.
I am Anna...
Anna is the role closest to my heart for reasons more than one. Strip myself of my upbringing and education and I'm her. I didn't make any preparations to be her; yet, being Anna was a beautiful experience. The backwaters, me in a no makeup look and clad in a sari... it was surreal. I fantasied playing the village girl — a first in my life. Anna is the quiet, docile girl who lets life happen to her; who has an innate sadness in her. All thanks to Rajeev who broke the stereotype of the glam girl image I've so far been in. On day one of the shoot, I felt like a deer caught in the headlights. There I was, clad in a bright yellow sari amid people who talked nothing but Malayalam (laughs). The film is also special in that this is my first love story. And tell you what — Kerala is so conducive to love with all its beauty!
My 'official' Telugu debut
Though I've had my films being dubbed in Telugu, director Kishore's next in Tollywood will mark my official debut in the Telugu film industry. The film, which is a remake of the Tamil hit Vettai, has me starring alongside Nag Chaitanya and Tamannah. Interestingly, the role I play in the film is just the opposite of Anna — she talks a lot, is quite aggressive and seizes life, which is in stark contrast to the demure Anna.
Acting with Kamal Haasan
For an actor with his experience, Kamal Haasan's never shown a complacent 'Been there; done it' attitude. In fact, it was amazing to see an actor of his stature sitting in the edit suite during break time, so fully involved in his much talked about film. For people like us, his persona might be intimidating; but once you get past it to the person that he is, you realise that one of the many good things about him is that he doesn't treat himself as a star, like fans do.
Getting personal
I want to get to a place where I can wake up content, thinking I've struck a balance between the personal and the professional. I'm the type who minds my own business; and am not keen on giving interviews on my mom's birthday, or my dog's birthday. I like to keep my private life private. I firmly believe marriage should happen as a by-product of love. For sure, I won't go hunting for a guy to love and get married to. But once I'm in love, I'll do what it takes to make it work. My guy? He should be honest; he must have integrity (pauses). I want to marry someone like Rasool... Which girl wouldn't want to be loved the way he loved Anna?
Up next
I don't want to sign a bunch of films just for the sake of it. I want startlingly different stories and good teams behind the venture to commit to any film. I get detached from a film soon after I wrap up its shoot. However, I'm attached to the team and the experience of working in the film. That's the kind of films I look forward to being a part of.
Karthika Nair completes her south run; to debut in Kannada
The actress is all set to step into Sandalwoodwith the remake of the Telugu film, Brindavanam
Looks like the year is promising for actress Karthika Nair, whose soon-to-be released and second film in Mollywood has her cast opposite two of the industries superstars, Mammootty and Dileep.
And now, the actress has just been signed on for yet another film alongside a superstar — this time, Sandalwood actor Darshan, alongside whom Karthika will be making her debut in the industry. A remake of the Telugu film Brindavanam, Karthika will play Darshan's leading lady in the big-budgeted flick.
"The original film starred Junior NTR and Kajal Aggarwal, and Darshan and I will reprise their parts respectively in the Kannada version," says Karthika, adding, "In fact, I've worked with Junior NTR in Dammu. Interestingly, all his remakes turn out to be superhit movies, thanks to their mass appeal. I'm sure Brindavanam will keep the trend going," Karthika says.
"In a way, I start from where my mother (and yesteryear actress) Radha left — she quit films with the Kannada flick Ranachandi, where she played a police officer. For that matter, even my aunt and former actress Ambika did a number of films in Kannada, despite her being a busy star in the Malayalam and Tamil industries as well. Though, I've no clue about the language. But I'm confident of doing justice to the role," says the Malayali girl, who became quite good at Telugu by the time her debut, Josh, became a hit.
Apparently, a good part of the film will be canned across Brazil and Iceland. "It's a family entertainer which will speak a lot about the importance of love and being loved," says Karthika, who's now shooting for the Tamil film Deal.

Bhamaa Back Again To Malayalam
The actress, who has gone ultra glam in Sandalwood, will next be seen in a bold role in Rajesh Gopan's women-centric movie
Actress Bhamaa, who is reaping success in the Kannada and Telugu film industries, says she is planning to dedicate more time for Malayalam films this year.
"Last year was too hectic, as I was busy doing back-to-back Kannada films. I will soon be completing the shoot of two of my Kannada projects, Ambara and Barfi. This year, I will have more time to focus on Malayalam projects," says the actress, who is currently gearing up for a marathon shoot in some of the coldest locales in the country — Kashmir, Ladakh and Darjeeling.
"I will be shooting three song sequences for Ambara in these beautiful locales and I am quite excited about it," she says.
Meanwhile, Bhamaa has signed a Rajesh Gopan directorial in M-Town — a women-centric one at that. Titled Mirror, the movie has five of Mollywood's leading ladies - Shwetha Menon, Bhamaa, Gowthami Nair, Meghana Raj and Aparna Nair — in prominent roles.
"I signed up for the project not just because I have a substantial role in it. The film has a great script. Besides, I have an all-new look in it. I play a married woman who stays put in the city as part of her job. It is not a glamourous role but a mature and bold role," says the actress, who will start shooting for the same in March.
Bhamaa says while she has been going ultra-glamourous in Kannada, M-Town saw her mostly in student roles. "With my latest signing, I will be able to prove that I am capable of doing serious roles. In fact, I would love to play more mature roles in Mollywood. This is also a film which can be categorised as a new-generation movie. And I am thrilled to be part of the change that the Malayalam film industry is undergoing," she signs off.
It’s stubble now for Mollywood gang
For Malayali men, a moustache is a sign of their masculinity or a symbol of manhood. Not anymore. Call it the western influence; today, some of the hottest dudes prefer to show off their six-packs and not moustaches. Instead of the typical thick, black moustache, new-generation hunks are sporting a stubble or a clean shaven look. And are their female fans complaining? Not a bit!
Some of the leading yesteryear actors in the Malayalam film industry such as Prem Nazir and Sathyan popularised pencil thin moustaches, which were a rage in their heyday. However, the pencil thin moustaches soon gave way to the now common full-grown, thick black moustaches — thanks to superstars such as Mohanlal, Mammootty, Jayaram, Dileep and Suresh Gopi for setting the trend.
However, some of the young and upcoming actors in M-Town — Dulquer Salmaan, Fahadh Faasil, Asif Ali and Nivin Pauly — have made the stubble look hot.
Though, they have no qualms in sporting a thick moustache or even a beard if the role demands. Fahadh Faasil sported a beard for Annayum Rasoolum and his upcoming flick, Amen, and Dulquer Salmaan carried the beard look with elan in Theevram.
There is another bunch of actors like Prithviraj and Narain, who made their entry into the industry with the 'Mallu' moustache and have ended up with the stubble or the clean shaven look.
"Malayalam film industry is producing a number of new-generation movies, and these young actors want to make themselves more appealing to the youth, who always look up to the West as their role model," says an industry insider.
Not just celebrities, but the new look has become a rage among youngsters in the state. And many believe that a stubble makes them look younger. "You look at least five years younger without the moustache," says Nithin, a media professional and adds that even women prefer the new look. Ram Varma, a software engineer, agrees. "I believe a stubble make men appear more stylish and handsome."

Dileep New filim as Charlie Chaplin in his next
The actor will reprise the mannerisms of Chaplin in R Sukumaran's Manoradham
Looks like it's the season of experimentation for actor Dileep. After playing to perfection the roles of a hunckback (Kunjikkoonan), an effeminate man (Chanthupottu) and a woman (Mayamohini), the actor is now filming Sound Thoma, where he plays a man with a cleft lip. Close on the heels comes the announcement of Dileep playing Charlie Chaplin in his next. While buzz is that Dileep is set to play Chaplin inManoradham, its director R Sukumaran makes a correction.
"Dileep will reprise the mannerisms of Charlie Chaplin; but neither is he playing Chaplin, nor will he dress like him."
Interestingly, the actor plays a stone mason in the film. Elucidating on the similarities between Chaplin and the mason, Sukumaran says, "Dileep plays someone who has neither seen Charlie Chaplin nor heard about him. However, much like Chaplin, he makes people laugh, though his life is dotted with tragic incidents. Without his knowledge, he somehow starts imitating Chaplin's gait and also tickles the funny bone of the people in his life. Like Chaplin, he loves the rain, during which he cries his heart out, without the world seeing his tears."
The director also adds that Dileep's character suffers from multiple personality disorder. "His wife is a huge admirer of Chaplin. It's from her and others' perspective that the audience learns that Dileep, intuitively, is assuming Chaplin's mannerisms."
The director, who has critically and commercially successful movies including Padamudra, Rajashilpi and Yugapurushan to his credit, says, "Today, Malayalam film industry is producing a lot of new-generation movies, which portray emotionally disturbing subjects like extramarital affairs. The theme of this film will make people realise the importance of relationships, especially the importance of the bond between a husband and wife."
The rest of the cast is yet to be finalised. Scripted by the director himself, the film will have K Ramachandra Babu cranking the camera.
Manoradham will go on floors soon after Dileep completes the shoot of Sound Thoma.
